What is Mā te Reo?
Mā te Reo is a Government funded programme established by the Minister of Māori Affairs in 2001 to support projects, programmes and activities that contribute to local level Māori language regeneration.
Who manages Mā te Reo?
Mā te Reo is administered by Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori. A Fund Management Committee, Te Rōpū Tautoko, makes recommendations on who should receive funding to the Board of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori.
Te Rōpū Tautoko membership is made up of representatives from Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (Māori Language Commission), Te Māngai Pāho (Māori Broadcasting Agency), Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga (Ministry of Education), Te Puni Kōkiri (Ministry of Māori Development) and four representatives from the Māori community.
Purpose
Mā te Reo is administered by Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori and provides financial support for community-originated projects that increase language use, proficiency and strengthens the ability of communities’ to lead language regeneration.
Who can apply for Mā te Reo funding

Iwi, hapū, marae, whānau, Māori organisations and individuals.

If the amount requested is greater than $10,000.00 (includes GST) then the applicant must be a legal entity (If you apply for more than $10,000.00 (includes GST) and you are not a legal entity your application will be declined).

If the amount is less than $10,000.00 (includes GST) and the organisation is not a legal entity then the applicant must be an individual.
Who cannot apply
Funding is not available to government agencies or academic institutions, or to individuals, groups or institutions that already receive regular programme funding directly or indirectly from Government.

When does the funding round close? |

The funding round closes at 5:00pm on 31st August 2012.

Will you accept late applications? |
A |
No. The database will automatically close at 5.00pm on Friday 31st August 2012 and applications that have not been submitted will be ineligible for assessment.

When will we be notified of the decision? |
A |
All applicants will be notified of the decision by 9th November 2012.

If I miss the closing dates can I apply at any other time in the year? |
A |
No. Mā te Reo is an annual funding round. If you miss these dates the next opportunity to apply will be in 2013.

This is up to you, however separate applications are required for each language category you apply to. Those categories are:

My current project has overdue report/s, how will this affect my 2012 application? |
A |
This will depend on whether you are consistently late, or whether this is a one off situation. ‘Applicant Experience’ is one of five criteria applications are assessed against and we will comment on whether a provider has completed their project on time, or not. Avoid reasons to decline your application by completing any overdue report.

If I apply online can I complete my application over a period of time? |

Yes. The database saves your information as you go. Also you can answer any question at any time. This is helpful if the response to one question sparks the answer to another.

Can I discuss my project with you? |
A |
Absolutely. We look forward to discussing your project and clarifying how it aligns to the language categories and the funding criteria. However, we suggest you contact us early. We expect to receive many telephone calls while the round is open.

How are the decisions made? |

Can I appeal the decision? |
A |
Yes. All government decisions can be appealed and Mā te Reo is no different. You will need to address your written appeal to the CE within four weeks of receiving our decision.
