Ake Associates Limited with the support of Mā Te Reo have released a new newspaper in te reo Māori.

TE KŌRAKO was launched in April 2008 and will be released online once a week for the next six months with the aim of increasing public access to the te reo Māori in the written form.

Feel free to print TE KŌRAKO and distribute for public use. All copyright of articles and their contents remains with the individual authors. Whilst more like a periodical than a scoop-finding, hard core hitting newspaper, we hope that people find value in it and support us to raise the awareness and value of te reo Māori.

Feedback so far about the paper has been really good, with many teachers, librarians and others saying that the articles and puzzle sections are coming in really handy as an additional resources for their students and customers.

TE KŌRAKO is about promoting the language and as many dialects as possible. We are still looking for contributors every week, so if you have a story or just want to tell us what’s happening in your rohe send it through to tekorako@akeassociates.co.nz.

Round Updates
Round Eight (2008)

We received 223 applications, requesting a total of $5.5 million dollars worth of requests. Applications have been assessed and we expect that final funding decisions will be made from 7-11 July you will be notified of the outcome of your application/s no later than Friday the 18th of July 2008.

Some applications were assessed early and those providers have already been advised as to whether their application was successful or not. These applications sought funds to celebrate Matariki and Te Wiki o te reo Māori 2008, and early decisions were required. This is the final year we will assess applications early and from 2009 onwards, all applications will be assessed together.

For your information, below is a breakdown of applications by funding category and by region. As expected the greatest requests for support came for language resources, events/promotions and wānanga reo. Language planning is an important aspect of language revitalisation and it is interesting to see that only 10% of the total requests were for planning activities. For those providers who regularly deliver projects with us and do not have a language plan, you may want to consider submitting an application next year to develop a strategic plan which will formally link your activities into an agreed strategy.

When we look regionally, the greatest requests for funding came from Auckland, Bay of Plenty/Taupo and the East Coast/Hawkes Bay. This is consistent with the spread of the Māori population across the motu.

Round Seven (2007)
To provide some continuity Clayton and Hollie have been allocated geographical regions and will be managing the contracts that fall within those areas.  Their contact details are shown at the end of this Ī-Pānui.

Northland Waikato
Auckland Taranaki/Whanganui
Bay of Plenty Manawatū

East Coast Wellington
Hawkes Bay South Island

Chatham Islands

We are currently managing 86 contracts.  Of those, 58 progress reports are overdue.  Some contracts have more than one overdue progress report and this is disappointing.  We ask that you be diligent and keep to the timeframes in your contracts.  Over the next couple of weeks we will be working closely with you to bring this up to date.  Communication is essential so please make contact with us if your progress report is overdue.  No matter what the reason we can work things out.

Round Four, Five and Six

Thankfully all Round 4 contracts are now complete and our attention has turned to all of the outstanding Round 5 and 6 providers.

Deadlines have been discussed with each of you and we aim to report in the next ī-pānui issue that these rounds are successfully completed.  You will be aware that as we are preparing to implement the decisions for Round 8 and spending time on past contracts reduces our ability to progress mahi in this round.  We urge all providers to keep to the timeframes in their contracts.

Progress Reporting - Handy Hints

Here are some handy hints for completing your reports online:

  • We appreciate receiving your reports both online and via the post, however, online is better as you can attach your invoice and any other document you wish to share.  Only a few use the ‘online’ facility and when we receive hardcopies of your reports we then have to enter them online.  This can delay payment .  Please use the online facility, and if this is a new process for you, ring us and we will talk you through it.
  • When completing the Final Monitoring Report remember to complete the very first page that asks you to record a description of your project. This is sometimes overlooked and any incomplete information will delay payment .
  • Always record your contract number.  Sometimes we will receive a single page in the post and have no idea who sent it.  In these instances we will put it aside and wait for the provider to ring asking why they haven’t been paid.  Don’t be one of these providers!

The Mā Te Reo Team

Clayton Reiri will be on leave from Monday the 7th of July 2008 and returns on Tuesday the 28th of October spending well earned time with his six month old daughter Rebecca Hope Aromea Lee-Reiri.  In lieu of Clayton’s departure Allie Hemara-Wahanui will pick up Clayton’s caseload and will become the contact person for you.

We are pleased to share that Jasmine Cooper, former Manager of Mā Te Reo has a new mokopuna named Matariki Christina Aiken-Cooper.  Born in Adu Dhabi, Dubai on the 24th of May.  Jasmine was there at the birth to welcome baby Matariki.

While Jas has moved to the Ministry of Education she remains part of the wider Mā Te Reo whānau as one of the representatives on Te Rōpū Tautoko. It is this committee that considers all applications and forwards their recommendations to the Board of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori for their approval.
