1. Language Planning

This category focuses on the development of a Māori language plan for iwi, hapū, marae, whānau or the local community. The plan will:

  • include a stock take/survey of target groups language ability;

  • be based on a series of consultation hui with the target group;

  • include long and short term goals with objectives and targets that can be measured;

  • include an action plan detailing what needs to happen to achieve those targets and goals; and

  • a process for implementing and monitoring progress.

Go here to download the two language planning resources:

  • Kia Ora ai te Reo Māori – Planning for Māori Language Regeneration; and

  • Te Reo Māori i Tō Hapori – Community Māori Language Profiles.

2. Language Resources

These projects focus on the development and distribution (free-of-charge or at low cost) of language resources such as books, games, puzzles and videos/cds/dvds. These resources must be developed for the home, marae or community and not for schools:

  • must identify a need;

  • may be targeted at any language level;

  • may support promotion of local stories and dialects;

  • must demonstrate a level of community engagement;

  • must not be produced primarily for commercial gain; and

  • must be trialed at the prototype stage with the target user group.

3. Events/Promotions

These are reo Māori concerts, festivals, games night, speech competitions and Māori language club activities. They focus on increasing Māori language speaking domains and opportunities to use te reo Māori. These projects:

  • must be delivered in a total immersion or bilingual environment; and

  • must not be held primarily for commercial gain.

4. Wānanga Reo

Wānanga Reo projects are community, and usually marae based and include weekend block courses, language programmes and classes and Kura Reo ā-Iwi. These projects:

  • must be facilitated in an immersion or bilingual teaching environment;

  • may be for any language level;

  • may be one-off or a series;

  • may range from a one day language class, a weekend wānanga, or a week long Kura Reo;

  • may be delivered in a ‘block’ or ‘blocks’ or as regular classes;

  • may be focused on a specific language kaupapa (e.g. karanga, whaikōrero etc); and

  • may be a number of classes delivered over a defined period with predetermined content.

In the application please state the number and duration of wānanga/weekly classes, participant and Kaiako/Personnel numbers involved.

If you intend using the Te Ātaarangi programme then one reference must come from Te Komiti Matua o Te Ātaarangi and a Te Ātaarangi kaiako must be used.

5. Kura Reo ā-Iwi

These are iwi based total immersion reo Māori wānanga targeting intermediate to proficient speakers of te reo Māori.

The programme should be designed around local histories that will strengthen traditional domains such as whaikōrero and karanga of that iwi or region.  A minimum of one week in duration.
